Description
What is PeckAway™ Grit Stone
PeckAway™ Grit Stone is a 12-lb donut-shaped stone composed mainly of sand/grit designed to be safely pecked by turkeys to help divert the instinctive behaviors of feather, head and litter pecking.
These instinctive behaviors reduce feed conversion efficiency, and once skin is exposed, the victimized bird will soon be attacked and cannibalism may increase throughout the flock. Litter pecking can lead to ingestion of pathogenic illnesses.
The product is dispersed throughout the house in areas where birds freely roam, providing a rewarding flavor that can be accessed.
PeckAway™ Grit Stones need to be conveniently displayed for the turkey to have access at will. In the brood simply place whole PeckAway™ Grit stones on a plastic lid or base from an old feeder as pictured below. In the finishing barn place PeckAway Grit stones in old feed pan and hang them from the ceiling or break them up into small pieces (1/8 to 1/4 size) and distribute evenly in the main feed pans throughout the barn. Distribute at a minimum 1 stone per 1,000 turkeys in the finisher and 1 to 2,500 in the brood.
